Thousands of marketing and sales professionals will descend upon Boston in just a few short weeks for INBOUND 2017—a powerhouse annual event that brought over 19,000 attendees from around the globe in 2016.

Being a HubSpot Platinum Agency Partner, we have attended every year. We are blown away by the amazing growth and the sheer size of the conference. Through keynotes, educational breakout sessions, innovative talks and, of course, networking opportunities, you’ll leave inspired and eager to put all you learned into action!

The days are jam packed, and you need a strategy to get the most out of the conference. So here are 8 tips to get you started...

1. Rest Up and Be Practical

INBOUND takes place at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. The sessions are located all over the building, and you’ll often find yourself doing a slow jog to get yourself there on time. (Not to mention squeezing in a visit to one of the many food trucks they have onsite for lunch!) With over six hours of sessions per day, plus events in the evening, be sure you’ve rested up when you arrive. You’ll be walking miles each day, so dress for comfort—really—and leave the heavy laptop at home. You’ll thank me later!

2. Update Your HubSpot Certifications

While it’s always a good idea to keep your HubSpot knowledge up to date, there’s no better time to refresh your memory and learn what’s new by updating your certifications. You’ll have access to hundreds of educational talks, and if you’re up to speed on the latest in HubSpot and inbound marketing, you’ll feel more comfortable attending a higher-level session.

3. Download the App

For the past few years, HubSpot has developed an app for INBOUND. This app allows you to see the sessions you registered for, mentions of the event on social media, a map of the convention center, and more. You can even interact with other attendees. The app is best used to navigate the conference and to be aware of any changes in your schedule. Rooms can sometimes switch last minute – leaving you rushing from one side of the convention center to the other.

4. Plan Your Agenda

There were over 300 educational sessions at INBOUND in 2016. That’s a lot of sessions, and you’ll often find yourself torn between several topics. Your best bet is to make a list of your goals for the year and match those to sessions being offered. Looking to improve your email open and click rates? Choose one of the many email-related sessions. Looking for inspiration on how to improve your brand? Attend one of the many "spotlight" sessions being offered. Better yet, if traveling with a team, divide and conquer so you’re not all attending the same sessions and can share what you’ve learned.

5. Set Up Meetings

Reach out to clients and prospects to see if they’ll be attending INBOUND. Take advantage of the conference to set up a meeting and have some one-on-one time. You should also take the opportunity to meet some of the HubSpot staff you’ve worked with or even visit their office. It’s the perfect time to ask questions and make new connections.

6. Manage Your Time

As I mentioned earlier, you may be running all over the convention center to get to the sessions you’ve registered for. Try to be strategic and choose sessions that are near each other. If this isn’t possible, don’t feel guilty skipping a session. If you need a little quiet time to check your email or return phone calls, it’s perfectly acceptable. You may not want to miss a thing, but taking a little time for yourself to recharge is important.

7. Make Sure Your Social Accounts Are Current

One of the things I love about INBOUND is meeting new people. Be sure to bring lots of business cards and take the time to connect with the people you’ve met on LinkedIn. Make sure that your social media accounts are up to date with your skills, accomplishments, and certifications. You never know who you’ll meet, and you don’t want to miss a chance to make your best first impression.

8. Don’t Be Shy!

Big conferences can get overwhelming, especially when you don’t know many people. Don’t miss this opportunity to meet others, learn about what they do, and ask questions! There are fascinating marketing minds out there, and you can share tools you use or challenges you’re having in your industry. There are also great networking events at night at restaurants in the area.

INBOUND only happens once a year, and it's a fun event featuring some of the best marketing and sales professionals in the field. The more you can take away from INBOUND the better to demonstrate the ROI of attending the conference. It just gets bigger and better every year!
